Top 10 Home Defects and How To Fix Them – Introduction to Series

I recently attended a workshop conducted by a large home inspection company in our area.  Their team of professionals conducted thousands of inspections for all types of properties.  They kept seeing the same types of issues with the homes they inspected and came up with a list of the 10 most common defects.

So, I am putting together a bi-weekly (every other week) series of articles highlighting each defect and how to correct, repair, or avoid them.    As a homeowner, knowing this information can help you identify these defects in your own home and can save you thousands of dollars in future major repairs by doing preventative maintenance

Per the home inspection company:

• most of these defects are the results of poor maintenance
• some are the result of poor workmanship during construction (especially for newer homes)
• most of these defects can be easily, and inexpensively fixed, if caught early
• if left unattended, these defects can only get worse and lead to much more expensive repairs, and in some cases, structural failure or fire

– Defects #1 thru 5 – have to do with exterior of the home
– Defects #6 thru 9 – have to do with the interior of the home
– Defect #10 – has to do with common DIY mistakes done by homeowners themselves (very crazy stuff!)
